Émigré, 2018

Acrylic on Polyester

22” x 22”

Artist Statement

The figure in Émigré is traveling toward what she hopes will be a new sanctuary. She transports something impossible, an elaborate sandcastle, perhaps trying to transfer a familiar past life into an unfamiliar new one. She is unprepared but poised for the challenge of what lies around the next bend.
As in much of my work, the subject is navigating metaphorically between the known and unknown; action and inaction; and control and lack of control over her fate.
The subject matter also recalls the migrations now occurring worldwide.
