Wonder’s Hold 1&2, 2022

Acrylic and Oil on Canvas

72”W x 60”H - each piece

Artist Statement

In my studio practice, I notice color and light. I begin with daily observation, bringing images and shapes into the studio. The first marks are a blind contour drawing adding thin layers of paint to build color and form. As my attention shifts, I inevitably see forms and shadows, and the way the light throws around unexpected shapes. Color takes precedence as the layers build.
In these two pieces, I’m after a sense of movement and space, right at the edge of my own wonder and curiosity.
The way I experience nature is layered, and these pieces encapsulate the hold that certain shapes and experiences have –peering into the reflecting light or noticing shadows on walks. It’s really the memory of a place that I end up working with. In the push and pull of the painting process, I emerge with something that resembles what I know.
